Paint in Sketchbook

It has been a very long time since I've pulled out the sketchbook and created a little art.  This time I used watercolors and a bit of ink.

This is a preliminary sketch for an idea I am playing with.  I want to do something on fabric.  I haven't painted on fabric for a very long time and no longer have any fabric paint.  I'll be going shopping for that later today.

Have you painted on fabric?  If so, what is your favorite brand of fabric paint?  Can you guess what I have in mind to create with painted fabric?  I'll give you a hit.  You can't wear it.  Or... I guess you could but you'd look awfully silly.

  1. I love this, Darla. I have only painted on fabric for one quilt. My son's 2nd grade teacher got married during the school year. While she was on a one week honeymoon, her sub (a friend of ours) and I had the kids draw pictures of "What Happiness Is" on 12" squares of paper. I traced these in fabric paint on 12" squares of cotton. These were pieced into a quilt and given to the teacher and her new husband. The ideas the kids had of happiness ranged all the way from their teacher (dressed in a red and white polka dot blouse that must have been a favorite as there were several) to Frankenstein (a green head, easily recognized as such). It was unique and the teacher loved it. I think there must be an infinite amount of area to cover in this medium and I'll look forward to seeing some of it. Happy painting.

  2. I really like your design Darla.
I haven't painted on fabric in years either, and have no idea what's even out there anymore. Hope you'll share what you find.
    Have a great week.

  3. Beautiful design. I have used ordinary acrylics to paint on Fabric and heat set them by ironing, and they even survive careful washing. Hugs, Valerie

  4. I have painted on fabric with fabric paint like Tulip and Lumiere, but I have also used cheap craft paint, too. Because I will never wash my pieces and because they will never get close to human skin, I don't care about the "hand" of the fabric.

I'm going to take a wild guess because when I start working on a project people often ask me if I'm making a PILLOW. I don't make anything I can't tear and I don't measure, either, so I always laugh and explain it's either a wall hanging or one of my scrappy journal covers.

So I'm going to guess you will be making a pillow and will need either fabric paint, OR the additive that turns regular acrylics soft to the touch when painted on fabric.

  7. I've always used just regular artist's acrylics for fabric; originally I just thinned with water, then after a few years discovered fabric additive. Keeps the collections of art supplies down... I've done it on pillows, wall hangings and a couple of clothing items. The hand pretty much sucks when done with regular acrylics; don't know what it's like with ones made just for fabric.

I'm going to guess 'pillow' for your pretty design!

  8. Cute! No I've never painted on fabric before. I do have an old white canvas bag I made that I'd love to paint, though. Will wait to see what you create. :)
