Tea Stands for Tuesday - 5/15/18

Tuesday is the day I join my friends on Elizabeth's blog.  We talk about many things and everyone is welcome to post as long as there is something drink related in your post.

I've been drinking this Stash tea lately.  I like the flavor and the color is beautiful.  I expect those of you who dye with tea would like too.

Meanwhile,  I recently dropped into a thrift store to look through their selection of  books.   While wandering the aisles, I found these two dinner sized plates.  I thought they were quite interesting and reasonable at $1.19 each.

I don't know this maker.  I looked them up but couldn't find these particular plates.  There was a platter with a similar pattern called "Mediterranean" though, perhaps these plates are part of that set.   Meanwhile the dishes will be used to serve snacks.  Cheese and crackers anyone?

Tea Stands for Tuesday - 11/14/17

Tuesday morning and if you are familiar with my blog you know what that means.  It is time to get together with friends over at the Altered Book Lover blog.

Coffee is ready and you can see someone has been drinking it.

Saw this on my morning walk.   I think I need this sign outside my door.

napkins marked Hallmark - 69 cents for the package

I recently stopped at a thrift store on a whim.  Not looking for (or needing) anything in particular.  I found this package of napkins.  I thought they were unusual and so they are going in my stash of mixed media art supplies.

I also found this small colorful lunch pail.

One of the little people in my life is sure to like it.

Spent very little but amused myself.

Tea Stands for Tuesday - 9/19/17

Good morning.  I've invited a fairy to our tea gathering this morning.  I'm getting ready to fill my cup with tea.

I recently found this fairy in a thrift shop.  I have a friend who is an avid collector of fairies and this will be a gift to her..  You can't really see it in this photo but the statuary has a typical fairy style cap (a cap of leaves) and fairy wings - not angel wings.  I've been educated about these things by my friend.

Won't you bring your favorite drink and join us at Elizabeths blog for our Tuesday get together?

Tea Stands for Tuesday - 8/22/17

Every Tuesday Elizabeth hosts "Tea Stands for Tuesday".  You can post about most anything as long as it is somehow related to a drink. Be sure to check it out.

This week I'm going to show you some thrift store decorating.  The River House is a second home that is used by our whole family.  It replaced a home we lost in a fire nearly 2 years ago.  Since I was decorating "from scratch" so to speak I decided to do it in a colorful style with hand made contents or things from thrift stores when possible.

Thrift store shopping can be weeks of nothing and then suddenly several finds at once.  Yesterday I showed you a coat hook, today there are some kitchen things.

thrift store - 99 cents

I found this sign.  I was originally going to use it as a base to paint my own sign.  When I got it home I played around with it and decided to use it as is in the kitchen.

It fit perfectly under a kitchen cabinet.  The bowl are thrift store finds as well - 49 and 69 cents.  I'm drinking water from a glass that came from the Dollar Store.  These things are quite inexpensive but somehow make me very happy.

Do you shop thrift stores?

Solar Eclipse

How many of you are planning to watch the eclipse today?  In our area we are expected to have only 70% coverage of the sun.  Since it will happen here around 9 a.m. we may well have our usual morning marine layer as well.  I'm not sure I will see much.

approx. 8x12"

Coincidentally I recently found this heavy metal "sun" coat hook at a thrift shop a few days ago.  There is a hook there at the bottom but it is hard to see in my photo.  DH is going to hang this in our patio, that is how we plan to mark the day.  It will be a good place to hang a gardening or rain jacket in the future.

Enjoy your day and be careful if you are watching the sun and the moon do their dance.

Tea Stands for Tuesday - 1/10/17

Sometimes I can't believe how fast Tuesday rolls around.  A couple of days ago we were at the River House.

I was sitting on the front porch having an early morning cup of coffee

Looking at all the bare trees and the red sunrise.  You've heard "Red skies in the morning, sailors take warning" haven't you?  Yes, we've had lots of rain and it is threatening to flood.  I can only cross my fingers.

On a more cheerful note, let me show you my latest thrift purchase for the house there.  Dishes.  I don't need more dishes, I just have a tiny weakness.....For Dishes.

They are not old  They are by Susan Winget and part of a set called Garden of Olives. I found them listed as salad/dessert plates but they are going to be perfect sandwich plates for me.  Three plates/$2.  I wonder if I will ever stumble across the 4th plate in the set in my thrift store hunts.

Lets take our drinks over to the Altered Book Lover blog and find out what has been happening since last Tuesday.  The people who post there seem to always have something interesting going on.

More Thrifted China

As I mentioned yesterday, I'm visiting thrift stores in search of colorful china.  I'm mainly interested in solid colors to make a mismatched set of dishes to serve our meals on but I'm also planning to hang some colorful dishes on the dining area wall.

This is a shallow bowl.  It was priced at $3.99 which is more than I'm usually willing to pay.  However, it is unusual and colorful so it went home with me.

Here you see that back of the piece and get a better feel for the bowl shape.  Notice there at the top of the base rim there are two holes.  Clearly this was meant to hang somewhere.

I found this plate for $1.  It is larger than a saucer but smaller than a dinner plate.  It is marked "World Market" on the back so it isn't old or particularly collectable.  I bought it for the color and design.

Are you seeing a theme here?  I hope so.

*Junk. Digging through America's love affair with stuff" (book)

I've been visiting thrift stores lately looking for items to furnish the River House.  I won't buy anything upholstered (bugs anyone?) but have found a couple of pieces to fill in.

Junk.  Digging through America's love affair with stuff.
Alison Stewart

At about the same time I spotted this book at the library.  Stewart follows some "junk" haulers and she goes behind the scenes at some popular TV shows that deal with things people want to sell or want to know more about.  Antiques Roadshow being the best known although there are a lot of related shows out there.  AR is the only one I've watched and I do enjoy it.  Not familiar with the others.

She also wrote the following which I found interesting.

"You have people like my folks who were born in 1929 who were taught to save. And then you have baby boomers who were taught to buy. And then also it became cheaper to buy new than to fix, and now you have the millennial... everything is on the phone and I share my cars."

I enjoyed the book a lot but maybe that's because "junking" is what I'm doing at the moment.

How about you?  Do you keep a lot of stuff that you don't use?  Do you shop thrift stores and yard sales?  Do you watch any of the TV shows related to this subject?
