I wonder if anyone dances around the Maypole these days. Back in what seems like the dark ages, I had the chance to be a Maypole dancer. I think I was in the first or second grade and attended a small country school where grades 1 through 12 were in the same building. I have very vague memories of the day and how excited I was about participating.
I, too, had a chance to dance around a May pole. I was in the sixth grade. Our group did a practice dance the day before and got the ribbons all tangled. The day of the performance (in front of the entire elementary school) we managed it without a hitch. A fun memory - thanks for nudging it from the depths.
ReplyDeleteHappy May Day! When the kids were young we set up a May pole every year and had a picnic after dancing around it. Fond memories :)
ReplyDeleteOh, how exciting that must have been for you Darla. I do remember reading about the Maypole as a little girl, but do not think I ever saw one in reality. Such a pretty and fun idea, from a different era.
ReplyDeleteI remember when I was in 2nd grade, we danced around a Maypole in the town square. We had to practice the day before and some of the girls got confused and went the wrong way. I think it worked out OK on the actual day we did it for the town. Much of the town was there because they had a parade and everything. The city was trying to bring back things from days long gone. If I recall correctly, someone even brought a Model T or Model A.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE that you brought up those memories. Thanks for that.
