Tea Stands for Tuesday - 2/4/2020

We've been at the house by the river.  Our citrus trees there are putting out lots of fruit.  Many people don't realize that around the end of January/first of February is the best time to pick oranges here in NoCA.

Our own organic oranges

I use a microplane to zest the oranges before I cut them in half and used an old fashioned juicer to make my orange juice.

While I get my drink ready why don't you visit the tea party at Elizabeth's place?

  1. I never thought of zesting orantes before juicing them. Do you freeze the zest or dry it? This brought back memories of staying with my Granny when I was 13. My uncle, 4 years older than I, taught me how to shoot oranges out of the tree with his BB gun. Oranges that were fresh and warm from the sun...such sweet memories. Thanks for sharing.

  3. How wonderful to have your own fresh oranges!! The only time I will drink OJ is with fresh squeezed fruit- and that's not very often here. I've had some special ones in FLorida and the juice was just the best! Happy T Day!

  5. that would be amazing to grow one's own citrus-I have a handmade pottery juicer that I bought from a potter back in the '70s I love it and always use it for juicing-Happy T hugs Kathy

  6. Wow, how amazing to grow and pick your own oranges! I bet they are delicious 😁. I didn't know this time of year was best for oranges, although I probably should have as I can only buy Seville oranges this time of year to make marmalade - yum 😉. Happy T Day! Hugs, Jo x

  7. We have citrus trees at home, we pick oranges from November onwards as they last for a few months on the trees, we also have pink grapefruit, kumquat, lime and lemon trees.
I just bought three bags full over for our son and two of his neighbours, I use most of them for marmalade.
    Have a great week

  8. I used to visit a friend in SOCAL at Christmas and always brought back huge bags of oranges from her trees. I also got huge bags of avocados from her tree, too. She told me her father planted a seed when she was a baby and the tree is so tall now, it produces far more than she can ever eat herself. I was delighted to take both off her hands. I miss those trips!

I was impressed that you zested your oranges before squeezing them. Super idea. I bought some oranges at Christmas and zested them before I used them in my meal. That's a beautiful milk glass tumbler, too. Thanks for sharing your oranges, your tips and tricks for squeezing them (I have two juicers just like yours) for T this Tuesday. So glad to see you here, too, dear Darla.

  10. I love oranges and orange juice. You're lucky to have them growing in your yard, so you can pick your own. I would've thought January and February was still a little too early for them to be ripe, but apparently not. Can you grow pineapples where you live? (I love those too. Now that would be Heaven, to have those growing in my back yard. But they would never survive the Winters here in Connecticut. Darn.) Happy T-Day!

  11. How cool to have your own fresh oranges. That is so far from life in New Hampshire that I find it really fascinating and since I eat a lot of oranges-almost everyday, I am jealous. Hope it was a good T day. Hugs-Erika

  12. Mmmmmm, delicious. Wonderful to have your own fresh organic oranges. Many of our oranges in Australia are imported from California!

  13. They'd be frozen here. Must be a treat to have fresh mid-winter. :)

  14. Your home grown oranges are gorgeous, Darla. I can imagine the smell. There's nothing like fresh OJ in the morning.

I loved the little poem you wrote in a comment on my blog this week, "Glad the chores are done and the fun has begun." Thank you.

    Belated Happy T-day! Eileen xx

  15. What a good idea to zest your orange before squeezing/peeling it. I assume you freeze it. It is an excellent idea. I will do that from now on. Here in Spain it is also orange time. Lovely.
    Have a lovely weekend,
(It's too late to say 'Happy T-Day')
    Hugs,
