Neighborhood Walk - 7/14/16

Window shopping makes my walk more enjoyable.  One of the shops I make a point of passing by is called The Gardener.  They have large windows and always something interesting to see.

Right now they are featuring orchids in their windows.

I think orchids make lovely houseplants but admit I don't have a lot of luck with them.  I did have one that lived long enough to bloom again but it sat around with nothing but green leaves for quite some time.

Have you ever grown orchids with success?

  1. Those orchids are gorgeous! I have one now that was in bloom when I got it. 3 years later it still hasn't bloomed again.

  2. Beautiful! I have never tried to grow orchids. Just saw a friend on FB post a photo of her orchid (coincidentally!) that she said hadn't bloomed in five years!

  3. What a beautiful window to gaze at as you are out and about. I read somewhere that orchids like moist air - hence the bathroom is a good spot for them. I thought what a waste that would be to not be able to see them. Have never tried raising them - but enjoy seeing them elsewhere.

  4. Although the orchids in the window are lovely, I've never seen a real one, so it's obvious I've never grown one. I've read they need lots of heat though, so they might not make it in my house in winter. I hope you saved the orchid even though it was non-blooming.

  5. I have a few orchids Darla, but know nothing about caring for them properly. Sometimes they bloom, other years not. They do look lovely in the window display, and coincidentally a flower shop at our local village has a very similar display at the moment. So tempting :)

  6. Never had an orchid. Very pretty display they have, though. :)

  7. Tim brought some orchids home a couple of years ago, and I panicked because I figured I could never keep them alive. Out of five, two have died now (unless the one that just flopped can come back from the roots) but I've had three rebloom this winter, and one is making a bloom stem right now. The supermarket ones are actually pretty easy if you a. don't over water and b. don't complete forget to water just because you got sick and weren't doing anything.

  8. I have never grown orchids - probably because I'm not a big fan. However, they ARE beautiful and I'd love to see them in the wild. Window shopping during your neighborhood walks must be real fun - I definitely would enjoy that!

  9. I don't really know what to do with orchids. Someone said just leave them and don't do anything but i can't quite bring myself to do that.
