Tea Stands for Tuesday - 8/23/16

Time for our Tuesday get together at Elizabeth's place.  I always look forward to Tuesday and the posts there.

Today I'm going to talk about the old Ball canning jars.  I'm particularly fond of the blue/turquoise ones.

Here is a pint sized one I have.  Sitting next to my glass of water.  Unfortunately it lost the original lid somewhere along the way.  If you look closely you will see the lid is clear glass.

I keep it empty because I like the way it looks when the sun shines through it on the kitchen windowsill.

I found the following information interesting.  I think my jar is like the third from the bottom, no underline under the word Ball. That would make it from about 1922.  My jar is at the other house and the picture isn't clear enough for me to be absolutely sure.

I have a few more old ones boxed up somewhere.  I'm going to look for them.  I do know there are new ones produced in this color as well.

Do you have any old Ball jars?  I have a couple of clear glass ones full of buttons.  Do you like to store odds and ends jars?

  1. I do love the pretty blue color of the jar, and yes, they do make great containers for storing buttons and such. Happy T day!

  4. I have one like yours...and lots of the blue quart size, one half gallon and several pints as well. I'm excited about the date chart you shared. Now I'm going to have to compare for myself. Thanks!!

  5. I had a couple, but my sister-in-law collected them and I thought the little half pint and the quart one I had would look better with her. I like how the sun shines through your jar, too.

  6. Oh that certainly IS a beautiful blue Ball jar Darla!
Seeing the sunlight stream through that beautiful glass must be a thrill.
The lid seems a very nice match eventho it is not blue.
Thank you for sharing that interesting chart too.
I need to round up my jars.

  7. Fascinating post. I've never seen a blue Ball canning jar but it is pretty cool. I've never thought about the history of canning jars-mine are the new variety you buy at the store to can in. But those old ones are really pretty. Happy T day. Hugs-Erika

  8. Golly, Darla. This is fascinating. I have about a dozen of these turquoise blue jars. Some even have their original lids, too. Others require the screw type lid. I had NO idea you could date them based on their logos. I've noticed that some are different, though, whether they were clear or blue.

Thanks for sharing this information with us for T this Tuesday. I'm off to check my jars, now! I'll join you in a glass of water, too.

  9. This jar is an amazing shade of blue, the sun will realy make it shine. We don't have that brand in the UK and the ones here are usually clear glass. You are lucky to have some older jars.
    Happy T Day.

  11. What a beautiful jar! A real antique. No wonder it takes pride place on the window sill. How interesting that you can date them by the script type. Yes, yours is not underscored so it must be the 1923-33 one.
    Thanks for sharing that,
Happy T-Day and a good week ahead,
    Lisca

  16. Well, I'll be darned. I had collected some of the old jars from thrift shops years ago because I use them for storing grains and beans, etc. Since then I have bought new ones, but the old ones are my favorites. I could see right off that I have a blue pint and half gallon without the line underneath and the same two blues with the line before the "a" and pointy line at the end (1910-1923). I have some Atlas and a Drey half gallon that is pre-1925. None of mine have the original covers, though. Interesting. I never thought to check it out. They have everything online, don't they? LOL! This was really cool! Thanks. :)

  17. You always have the most interesting posts Darla!
I am a container junky so that will explain why I hoard...I mean collect them. No colored Ball jars, but I do have some half pint Kerr jars my Mom used to can jelly in. They aren't that old, but they are the perfect size for many things. I just bought a beautiful antique coffee cup, which I meant to share for T-day, and forgot. I had it sitting on Betsy to get a photo......and now it is sitting there full of binder clips....LOL!

    Have a great weekend!!
